  Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) Training and Certification for Public Schools

 

District of Columbia Public Schools

Challenge

In 2000 only 77% of all public schools had Internet access. In addition to this information deficiency , the District of Columbia encountered other obstacles as well. Of the 167 public schools in the District, 12% of the student population belonged to a language minority group and another 7.7% were classified as Limited English Proficiency (LEP). There were 112 different languages that represented 138 different nationalities. The District was in desperate need of a resolution as to how to bridge this gap. LTC  intervened and implemented the Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) training and certification for select teachers. MOUS was spearheaded by the Vocational Education Office of the DC Public Schools and focused upon business, technology, marketing and computer teachers.

Approach

In February of 2000 through June 2001, LTC entered into a training agreement with the District of Columbia Public Schools to provide MOUS training. After analyzing the situation and defining measurable outcomes and goals, LTC approached the situation with extreme resourcefulness and commitment to change. LTC executed a plan that included development and training. Our work effort incorporated training coordination, course curriculum design, and project management and implementation.

Result

After undergoing MOUS training and certification selected teachers were then equipped with the skills needed to train and certify students. LTC implemented the project in four phases. Phases one and two consisted of training and testing. Phase three, "Train the Teacher", was followed by phase four, the "Project Outcome and Assessment" phase. All objectives and goals were met within the allotted time frame and within budget.  LTC, Inc. continues to successfully develop and implement training sessions to orient staff and management to proper use of the required software packages.
